Jiuzhaigou Valley: A Fairytale of Lakes, Waterfalls and Forest
分享
Turquoise lakes, layered waterfalls, and quiet boardwalks through alpine forest — Jiuzhaigou Valley is one of Sichuan’s most unforgettable nature escapes.
Why visit
Jiuzhaigou (the “Valley of Nine Villages”) sits in northern Sichuan and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. What makes it special is not only the color of the water, but the way lakes, falls, and forest stack into one continuous landscape. For travelers who want scenery that feels almost unreal — without needing technical hiking — this valley is hard to beat.
Highlights
- Five Flower Lake (Wuhua Hai): multi-colored water and submerged tree trunks that photograph beautifully in clear light
- Five Colored Pond (Wucai Chi): a compact but intensely vivid pool near the upper valley
- Mirror Lake: still reflections on calm mornings — worth arriving early
- Nuorilang Waterfall: a wide, photogenic cascade and a natural mid-park meeting point
- Pearl Shoal Waterfall: a broad sheet of water spilling over pale mineral shoals
- Long Lake (Changhai): a dramatic high valley lake at the end of the route
- Shuzheng lakes & villages: gentler scenery with a softer cultural atmosphere
- Primordial Forest walks: cooler shade and a quieter pace between the famous viewpoints
Best time to go
- Late September to mid-October: classic foliage season and the most iconic colors
- Spring to early summer: strong waterfalls and fresh greens after winter
- Summer: lush and lively, but expect rain showers and more visitors
- Winter: quieter and atmospheric; some routes or facilities may be limited by snow and ice
Even in warmer months, pack a light mid-layer. Elevation keeps the air cooler than you might expect.
Getting there
Most visitors fly into Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH) and continue by road to the park area. Staying overnight in Jiuzhaigou / Zhangzha town makes an early park entry much easier. Overland travel from Chengdu is possible, but it is a long day — better as part of a wider Sichuan itinerary.
Inside the park, official shuttle buses connect the main trailheads. Use them strategically, then walk the boardwalks at the lakes you care about most.
Practical tips
- Buy park and shuttle tickets for your date in advance whenever possible — peak season can sell out
- Carry your passport for entry checks
- Arrive early for softer light, Mirror Lake reflections, and shorter first-bus lines
- Stay on marked boardwalks; they protect fragile lake edges
- Eat a solid breakfast before entry; mid-park food options are limited and busy
- Bring water, sun protection, and a light snack
- Walk slowly on uphill stretches — altitude is moderate but noticeable for some
- If photography matters to you, consider a second half-day so you are not racing every stop
Suggested pacing
One full day: focus on the classic lake-and-waterfall circuit, prioritizing Five Flower Lake, Nuorilang, Pearl Shoal, and either Long Lake or the upper colored ponds depending on energy and bus timing.
Two days: use the second visit for quieter forest walks, village-side lakes, and the photos you skipped while moving with the crowd.
