Jiuzhaigou Valley: A Fairytale of Lakes, Waterfalls and Forests

Jiuzhaigou Valley is one of the most remarkable natural destinations in China.

Located in northern Sichuan, the valley is known for its snow-covered peaks, forests, waterfalls, streams and colourful alpine lakes. Jiuzhaigou was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992, with its protected area covering approximately 72,000 hectares.

The lakes of Jiuzhaigou are often called “haizi,” meaning small seas.

Jiuzhaigou is also famous for its waterfalls, mountain streams and travertine formations. UNESCO describes its combination of lakes, waterfalls, forests and limestone terraces as a rare natural landscape.

Walking along the wooden paths, travellers can hear water flowing through the forest. Nuorilang Waterfall and Pearl Shoal Waterfall provide dramatic views, while quieter lakes and streams reveal the peaceful side of the valley.

Spring brings fresh greenery and mountain flowers. Summer offers lush forests and clear blue water. Autumn fills the valley with golden, red and orange leaves, while winter creates a quieter landscape of snow and frozen waterfalls.

Travel Tips

As parts of Jiuzhaigou are located at higher elevations, visitors should explore at a comfortable pace. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and warm clothing are recommended.

For a complete Sichuan experience, Jiuzhaigou can be combined with Chengdu, Huanglong or Chongqing in a six-to-nine-day itinerary. This allows travellers to enjoy both vibrant city culture and the spectacular natural landscapes of western China.
